Bee Quilt Front

Hi everybody,

I have been very busy putting the final touches to the “Bee Quilt” and have finished the front piece.  I was so nervous of the middle section not lining up with the top and bottom half.   Also the centrepiece will be joined to the main centre quilt (lavender) by poppers.  I was worried about when it would get washed so made it removable.

Here is a close up of the centre piece.

It all needs a jolly good iron but apart from that I am rather chuffed with myself as this type of sewing is definitely pushing the boundaries.

Sewing Sunday

Hello

Amidst all the photography and playing with Hetty (See her post – later), I have been sewing, knitting, and colouring.

Lady Greensleeves has not been ignored – and I have achieved a fair bit of filling in the gaps and the foliage at the back.

Knitting wise – I have knitted the back until starting casting off for the sleeves.

And last  but not least, I have coloured in some more of the owl design.

Well that’s all for now.

Unfurling

Hello

I thought that I would share some spring photos with you.  They are mainly photos of trees and their leaves unfurling and little shows of blossom and flowers.

Apple tree and blossom – that is not an overly large live blue tit but one that my Husband got and screwed to a branch.  Birds do not seem to care that it is there.

Canadian Maple Tree and blossom – has huge burnt copper and burgundy leaves.  I will take some pictures as the season develops.

trees 5

Oak Tree – this is where the ring necked doves want to build their nest.

trees 6

Photinia with sunlight through leaves

Rhododendren – such a gorgeous shocking pink.

The raised garden with winter flowering pansies – a shame to move them yet.  We will wait till end of next month to plant up this bed.

grave for ruffles

This is Ruffles Grave ( R.I.P my lovely pet cockatiel).  The bell is the one he loved to play with in his cage.  A deep red rose is planted on top and a bleeding heart is planted at the bottom.  I ring the bell whenever I go near the raised garden and say “hello”.  Silly I know – but you can not be serious all the time. (did that sound a bit John McEnroe!!!)

Bye for now!

Projects – Art by nature

Hi Everyone

Well my week started off bad – health wise I suffered a major migraine with total numbness down my right-hand side – it’s called hemiplygic migraine – and totally debilitating.  After the headache had receded and my arm came back into use (Tuesday) I could achieve some sewing and read a little.  My leg stayed numb all week but I did go back to work Thursday and Friday am.  By Saturday the pins and needles feeling had subsided and I was able to get about our property without the aid of the crutch – just limping a little so as not to put too much pressure on that leg.

To stay relaxed I decided to try my hand at fabric pen art.  I had purchased some fabric with a view to trying this new means of creativity.  Having first coloured in a somewhat psychedelic floral pattern – see below:

I then tried my hand at colouring the piece with owls on.

Now which Owl is your favourite:

owls orange

The Tawny Orange Eyed Owl

owls purple

The Blue Tailed Purple Owl

owls peacock

or  The Peacock Owl

Let me know which one you like.

See other post for more news.

Bee centrepiece

Well hello!

I have finished stitching the bee cross stitch to some lilac fabric – see below – and now just have to attach the lavender fabric to make the centre square.  Then I can attach the outside patchwork squares to make the middle section complete.  After that I can stitch the sections together and the front of the quilt will be complete.

bee centre piece sewn on

Not been able to sew due to illness (see previous post) so hopefully will get back to this soon.

As an aside – Did you know that bees only see in ultra-violet!  And that they head for blue flowers.  I didn’t – isn’t nature fascinating, rewarding and there is so much to learn.

More bee facts: –   There are 267 species of bees in the British Isles.  225 types of solitary bees – fend for themselves and raise their own young.  19 species of Bumblebee , eight types are common to our gardens.  Also different bees emit different levels of buzzing – either higher or lower on the musical scale.  Fascinating!

Shall I buzz off now!

Blackbirds

Hi Everyone

The first babies to be hatched were the blackbirds and whilst they didn’t build their nest in our garden they are fledged and being fed in our garden.  There are three babies and below you can see some pictures of the male blackbird running around trying to feed all three.  His little old legs running back and forth like no tomorrow.

Hope this cheers anybody up who has snow.

Birdy Bytes

Hi there, Hetty here

Well you will never guess what – I turn 15 on the 23rd April – and my human mummy is looking to spoil me.  I know that she has already bought me some new toys to destroy – I mean play with.

I’m not sure about this but I feel rather sleepy today – maybe it is the dull weather we are having at the moment in the UK.  Mummy has let me out of the cage and whilst I had a little fly around; (I am fully flighted you see as my human does not believe in cutting my flight feathers – some people do this to prevent accidents like flying at full speed into a window etc)  I am used to the layout of my room and circled it several times landing on the copper lamp shade.  All I really wanted was to nuzzle and sleep on mummy – see pictures

Lazy days!  Life is good!  Roll on sunny weather so I can visit the garden, listen to my fellow brethren tweeting with joy.

Bye for now!

A little bit of this and that …

Hi everybody,

Well this week has been busy – back to work Monday  – and then friends over for Fish and Chips on Thursday evening – had a good laugh.  Felt rough on Friday – just the normal headache problem and nausea, had a restful day.

Little bit of sewing achieved on Lady Greensleeves and some progress on the back stitching for the Bee Design that is the centre piece of my Bee Quilt.  Finally finished the back  stitching on Sunday Morning and here is the finish.Finished Centrepiece

I’ve now pinned it to some lavender fabric and intend to sew around the design with some lilac thread in little crosses and then maybe fray the ends.  That idea may change.  My intention is to use poppers to secure this part to the main quilt, so that I can remove it if there is cause to wash the quilt.

Knitting – nothing achieved on that front.

6 Quilts cut out and ready to be sewn together.  No pressure there!!!

Well that is all for now.

Bye

New Books

As this was the last day of my week  from paid work, my husband and I went to one of our favourite bakeries for a lunch time treat and next door is a favourite book shop.  I can never resist going in – I love the smell of books.  Kindle is not for me (at the moment!)

The first new books I bought were both on the subject of reverting back to basics and helping Mother Nature in the best possible way.

new books - 31st march 2019

Should be interesting and inspiring.

The other books were published as I done the food shop at our local supermarket.  They will be a quicker read – perhaps take to work for lunchtime.  Quite diverse in there subject though.

Easy reads March 31st

I keep thinking about going to the Hay Book Festival – never been, but I would probably have to take an empty rucksack because I would definitely buy books.  Maybe some time in the future.

That’s all, I am now going to start reading.  Thanks for stopping by.

Bye
